We just had our 1st confirmed sighting of a Northern Goshawk (gorgeous
male) at our feeder since May of last year. Although we weren't home much
during last summer while working on the Atlas project, we had pretty much
given up on our 'resident' goshawk. We have been having especially large
numbers (30-40) of Mourning Doves all winter, but noted the past several
weeks their numbers have been more modest. Yesterday I heard them flush
suddenly and saw a large shadow fly through the yard, but I was unable to
identify it. Now we know the possible reason for the reduced number of
doves. We still host from 25-35 Blue Jays which would make a nice meal for
the goshawk and help to reduce our feed bill. Along with the goshawk
sighting, we continue to host 60-75 Common Redpoll with an occasional
Hoary, 1-2 Pine Grosbeak, and occasionally 12 Evening Grosbeak.
