There have been many eBird reports of Nelson’s Sparrows at Lake Barney
recently, and i haven’t been able to find any along the Milwaukee lakefront, so
today I went to Lake Barney near Oregon.
When I arrived, another birder (I believe Aaron H.) informed me that he had
good looks at five Nelson’s Sparrows, so this was very encouraging.
He also suggested walking straight out instead of turning left at the fence
like we used to do in previous years. When you get to the muddy shoreline, walk
left and start searching the huge stretch of smartweed near the lakeshore.
At first things were pretty slow, and I was only able to get one obstructed,
but identifiable, look at a Nelson’s. There were small sparrows flushing, but I
couldn’t identify them in flight, and I knew there were also Savannah Sparrows
in the area. Soon, other birders arrived, and with more eyes searching, I was
able to see 3 more perched. Ann G. spotted 2 perched which gave the best looks
of the day. Steve Thiessen estimated that there were at least 8 Nelson’s
present, and with all the smartweed in the area, there were probably more.
