It was a beautiful day to be out and about today. Vivid deep blue sky, bright sunshine, light winds. A little chilly, but I'm not complaining. Bird activity was a little light, but there were a few highlights: * Eastern Bluebirds foraging in an ornamental fruit tree south of Bradford Beach, along with Cedar Waxwings and Robins. * Ten Canada Geese asleep on the snow by McKinley Beach. Haven't seen many of these birds lately. * For a while I thought I'd found a set of turkey tracks yesterday at McKinley Beach. I was excited!! But today I walked past the sleeping geese and found similar tracks associated with that flock. * An American Goldfinch was singing just to the west of Bradford Beach. I figure spring will get here some day... * In an earlier posting I talked about some shrubs/trees with dark black berries. Someone told me they might be the invasive Buckthorn. Anyway, the birds have been ignoring these berries all winter. Today I guess the Cedar Waxwings got desperate enough to start eating them. Got some nice close up views of the Waxwings...beautiful birds! The ground under these trees was kinda interesting. Bright white snow illuminated by the sun, dotted with with very dark circles of excreted berry juice. * While eating lunch at Whole Foods, a wheeling flock of pigeons caught my eye. Something looked a little odd. Watching the flock I realized that there were a number of European Starlings mixed in, flying in formation with the pigeons, They did this for quite a while. Don't think I've ever seen this behavior before. Bernie Sloan Milwaukee #################### You received this email because you are subscribed to the Wisconsin Birding Network (Wisbirdn).
