I've speculated earlier that drought and fires in the Southern Great Plains may influence what we may find here in Wisconsin. For instance Eared Grebes numbers seem up here as well as Iowa with a raft of 20 (!) seen in East Iowa and more in Illinois. Other recent observations include these birds with a decided Texas/Southwest flavor: Black Rail -- Two record in recent days from Iowa -- though tough to pin this down I believe these Black Rail are coming out of Kansas and Oklahoma. Neotropical Cormorants -- IA. Painted Redstart -- MN. Cinnamon Teal -- IL. Black-bellied Whistling-Duck -- WI, IL. Ibis -- IL. Herons and Ibis may be a thing to watch out for and maybe assorted passerines as well as Stilts and more Avocets. Rains occurred over the weekend but dry winds are expected to start again and disperse birds maybe in our direction from the affected areas. Joe Schaufenbuel Stevens Point.
