Returned to the homeland for Easter and took advantage of some time on the river to tally a few birds. Conditions are not quite so spring-like up there as they are here in the Valley. A wall of shove ice 15'-25' high along the shoreline has become something of a tourist attraction even as it has closed roads, ruined fences, and toppled over trees. The Bay is frozen over yet and the inland ponds still have slabs of dark ice in their middles. So quite a few migrants were stacked up on the open water of the river awaiting better conditions before proceeding north. A rookerie on an island across from Marinette Marine is mostly-occupied, but a majority of the tenants are Great Egrets rather than Great-Blue Herons as in years past. Perhaps the herons will displace the egrets as they arrive. There was some kind of hatch of little black flies, but it was too cold and damp from the fog that had condensed over the Bay ice and rolled inland for them to get airborne, so swallows and waterfowl alike were picking them off the surface of the river. Saw far more and a wider variety of swallows than I have seen to date in the Appleton area. First of the year Caspian Terns as well. Complete list below.
