I spent a brief time early this morning in the area mainly between Black Creek and Shiocton. The Mack WA had my first of the spring White-throated Sparrow and FOY Eastern Towhee. At the diked ponds along Van Patten Rd, the nw dike had 10 Yellow-headed Blackbirds (FOY), plus 10 duck species, etc. The real surprise was checking out the road north of the dikes, which is dry, when an Upland Sandpiper called several times (FOY). There is no way this bird will be nesting here, incorrect habitat, so it was probably just moving through. The "ponds" nw of Shiocton along 76 and W have limited habitat and consequently few birds. The pond along 54 west of Shiocton has some what better habitat but few birds. And with the strong southwest and now northwest winds, it is drying out the limited shorebird/waterfowl habitat again.
