Lots of migrant activity today at Frautschi Point, Picnic Point and Class of
1918 Marsh.
Out on the water northwest of Picnic Point was a good sized raft of ducks
totaling about 300 birds including COOT, BUFFLEHEAD, REDHEAD, LESSER SCAUP,
CANVASBACK, SHOVELERS and RUDDY DUCKS (most males in breeding plumage). There
was also one PIED-BILLED GREBE and two HORNED GREBES. Two COMMON LOONS were
foraging far out on the lake. On the path I stumbled onto a WINTER WREN near
the water. And the pond/marsh on Picnic Point had 3 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 5 WOOD
DUCK, along with a few TREE SWALLOWS.Â
In the woods of Frautschi there were at least 3 HERMIT THRUSH, 6 GOLDEN-CROWNED
KINGLETS, 2 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, and many YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS.
Biocore Prairie had at least two EASTERN PHOEBES, one EASTERN BLUEBIRD and one
singing FIELD SPARROW.Â
At the Class of 1918 Marsh near Bay Fields, I heard a SORA (possibly two) and
was told by another birder that an AMERICAN BITTERN was around but I was unable
to hear or see it while I was there. Also present were at least three
RING-NECKED DUCKS, four GADWALL, SHOVELERS, WOOD DUCK, another EASTERN PHOEBE
and around 20 TREE SWALLOWS.
The big find near the 1918 Marsh was a singing GRAY CATBIRD in a hedge just
north/northwest of the viewing platform.Â
