Jim Otto reported that in Jackson County last night he heard a Whip-poor-will, but did not hear any Chuck-will's-widow at the usual spot along Bartos Rd. He mentioned that the area south of Bartos had been logged - it'll be interesting to see if that affects "Chuck's" site fidelity, assuming he or his possible offspring return this year. For those of you new to the list (or to Wisconsin,) a Chuck-will's-widow has been reported from the same spot in Jackson County for, what is it now Mark K.? - seven years in a row? It's been heard (and seen by some observers, at least once with a probable female "Chuck") near the correctional facility east of Black River Falls at the intersection of Kirch and Bartos/Staffon Rds., a mile north of Hwy 54. The current early date is May 1, two years ago. There have been scattered other reports over the last two or three decades, mostly from southwest Wisconsin (especially Vernon County,) although Charles Naeseth heard one at Olin-Turville Park in Madison, of all places, a couple of years ago.
