Even with casual snooping around the area the last couple days had a nice mix of species in spite of the weather. Had FOY great egret today and brown thrasher yesterday. The thrasher was belting out his abstract, noisy song early a.m. high in a tree in a brush fence. Had flyover bonaparte's gulls and hawks I couldn't Id because of distance and lighting. Spotted several great blue herons as well. Stopped on a quiet country road to check out a kestrel and heard an eastern meadowlark singing. Glassed the bare green field and there was a male evidently courting a female. He was standing tall pointing his beak skyward doing his best to show off his bright yellow breast and throat. Also had what appeared to be courting activity between 2 blue jays and 2 muskrats in a ditch. Two pair of bluebirds this afternoon. Ruddy ducks on L. Sinissippi this morning. Earlier in the week had FOY barn swallow and chipping sparrows. Also had male and female rusty blackbirds mixed in with redwings right here at home. And it wouldn't be spring without the gaudy tom turkeys strutting their stuff for the hens. Almost forgot, had a lone horned lark today. Do horned larks nest in southern Dodge Co.?
