Nolan Pope and I tried and failed to see the King Rails today. We did have a
nice walk on Old Marsh Road. Once you get east of the tree area, the marsh is
lively.
We did see both bitterns. The B-c Night-herons were going back and forth
carrying nesting material (late?) Cormorants and pelicans were flying about
also. The Marsh Wrens were quite noisy today ,even I was hearing lots. 2 male
Yellow-headed Blackbirds were still territorial.
Walking the red rock area north of the broadwalk, didn't produce the King
Rails. The west side had lots of egrets, some Black-necked Stilts, Lesser
Yellowlegs and Least Sandpipers.
The south side of Hy 49, west of the historical marker still had many
Black-necked Stilts.
The south side of HY 49, east of the pumphouse, has a large mud area. There
were 100+ Least Sandpipers, 3 S-b and 3 L-b Dowitchers, 1 Greater and many
Lesser Yellowlegs, lots of Killdeer and 4 Black-necked Stilts.
Our only gallinule of the day was just across 49.
