I spent about 3 hours early this morning birding a few spots at High Cliff SP
(6:30 - 9:30). There were two outstanding waves---the first at the Butterfly
Trail parking lot and the second at the Lime Kiln Trail parking lot. 25
warbler species plus a hybrid. In addition there were other nice migrant
sightings. Best was the Prairie Warbler at the first spot, plus an Olive-sided
Flycatcher and the resident male Orchard Oriole and Scarlet Tanager. The
second spot had the hybrid Brewster's Warbler (first one I have seen in a long
time), great looks at a male Black-throated Blue Warbler (my favorite).
Warblers that might be expected but were not present today were Wilson's and
Canada. Had a Philadelphia Vireo at the second spot. Oddly no Red-eyed Vireo.
For the time spent here about 90 species. Nice to see what Milwaukee has been
seeing these past days. And then comes tomorrow's weather----a little early
snow/sleet and then all rain with temps in the 40s and wind chill in the 30s.
Ah, spring in Wisconsin! And tomorrow is the first day of the Horicon Marsh
Festival where 3 of us are leading the bus trip.
