Thanks to everyone that has been visiting and ebirding their observations
this spring at the Harvey - Wangsness wetland. There have been an
impressive number of late migrants and uncommon species. Hopefully the
red-necked grebe that has been observed is with a female that is on a
nest. I was pleased to see the avocet yesterday.
As many of you know this wetland has been pumped for many decades. We can
remember the highwater year of 1993 and the wide variety of birds including
the king rails walking in the road.
On March 16, 2019 the wetland filled with water and the pump was replaced
last summer. I believe it has been pumped everyday since September 1, 2019
and the water area is the same size. My guess the reason the water is
still high is that the farmer is pumping groundwater. I spoke
with the farmer last September and he says that he is pumping since the
land is productive farmland.
This would be an excellent area to be protected and restored to grassland
and wetland habitat.

out there yesterday and found a green Nikon spotting scope case and eye
