Subject: [wisb] Harlequin Duck in Milwaukee
This afternoon I observed a first winter male Harlequin Duck from the walk
south of the Texas Ave. overlook. He was in the limited open water at the
gap in the breakwall along with Greater Scaup, Common and Red-breasted
Mergansers and Common Goldeneye. I checked all the eBird reports so far from
this year, and those reports that indicated gender, reported a female, so
this may be a different bird.
While I was there, I saw two people walk out on the ice toward the open
water. One of them broke through the ice and I was wondering if a call to
911 would be in order. However, through the scope, I saw they were Coast
Guard and were in no distress with the fellow in the water smiling and his
companion standing by unconcerned. Soon, I realized they were having a
rescue drill.
A man in the neighborhood ran out of his house and said he saw two men
walking out on the ice, and suddenly there were only 1 and 1/2 a man!
Unfortunately, all this activity scared away most of the waterfowl, but I
suspect they will be back.
At the South Shore Yacht Club there was an adult Peregrine Falcon resting in
the marina but the whole area was iced over and devoid of other birds.
