Just a quick update on the flycatcher nest which successfully hatched on what I
believe to be Thursday June 29.
At ten days old, it's apparent that the parent birds are currently very busy
feeding some ravenous young by the number of trips they are making daily with
food. What started with small spiders and flying insects has now advanced to
mostly large dragon flies, stone flies, caddis flies, grasshoppers, June bugs
and wasps.
Their defense of the area around the nest has gotten more aggressive as well.
I've watched several hairy woodpeckers being literally latched onto and taken
to the ground screaming all the way and minus a few feathers afterwards.
Chipmunks for whatever reason also seem to really get them agitated and if one
comes anywhere near the base of the tree that the house is mounted on, they are
immediately driven off. An eastern kingbird flew in the other day and landed
on a branch about 20 feet from the house. When the flycatcher flew in and
landed on the house with food for the young, the kingbird launched an attack
which was met head on by the male flycatcher. Amazingly the battle that I
thought would surely be the best yet, was short lived with the kingbird
retreating.
Below link to a few photos of the parent birds with food ready to be delivered.
