Kelly, Rory, and everyone,

If you are planning on heading up to Duluth to search for Boreal Owls, here are
my suggestions based on reports I've heard and where I've seen them:
Start on the northeast end of Duluth. Where Hwy 61 becomes 4-lane, Scenic Hwy
61 turns off to the right. Turn down Scenic 61 and slowly cruise north along
the lakeshore. Take the first left and then the first right and cruise the old
North Shore rd to the end. Then come back and turn down onto Scenic Hwy 61
again (also called Congdon Blvd on Google Maps). Drive Scenic Hwy 61 north
along the lake again until you get to Two Harbors. If you don't see a Boreal
Owl, come back and try again. Most of the recent sightings have been within
the first few miles of where Scenic 61 turns off of the 4-lane Hwy 61. Several
recent sightings have been up in the Knife River area as well.

If you are planning on coming up this weekend, just look for the crowd of
birders. It sounds like there will be a lot of people around, looking for
owls.
Please keep in mind that respectful behavior is expected at all times. These
owls don't need undue amounts of stress, and most are looking for whatever food
they can find.

Good luck and see you up there!

"The beauty and genius of a work of art may be reconceived, though its first
material expression be destroyed; a vanished harmony may yet again inspire the
composer; but when the last individual of a race of living things breathes no
more, another heaven and another earth must pass before such a one can be
again."
