Here's a link to an interesting piece posted in Biology Letters, a vehicle used by the Royal Society to present research articles and opinion pieces dealing with topics across a wide spectrum of biological sciences. The article deals with the recent North American Ornithological Conference held in Canada and how major ornithological societies are cooperating more with each other and sharing more data. It also speaks to advances in understanding birds in their full annual cycle (not just breeding in North America), developing more regional and global patterns through ecosystem studies, and establishing better understanding of the phylogeny of the relationship of species within families (for example, wood-warblers). Interesting comments at the end of the article about the importance and evolution of amateur naturalists and citizen science contributions http://rsbl.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/early/2012/10/19/rsbl.2012.0876.full Numerous links to other papers, articles and opinion pieces on a broad range of tipics. Might be worth bookmarking.
