Subject: eBird Report - Estabrook Park , 2/19/11

Location:     Estabrook Park
Observation date:     2/19/11
Notes: 23°F, sunny, clear, winds NW gusting 6.9 mph. River swollen with
snowmelt; large stretches free of snow and ice. Observed Killdeer for 5 minutes
through 7x42 binoculars from 20-30 feet away in excellent viewing conditions
(bright sunshine) near the canoe put-in just upriver of the Estabrook Dam. Bird
called loudly as it landed on ice along east shore of river, stood alert as I
studied it, then flew downriver while calling. I saw warm brown upper parts;
snow white belly, chest, and throat; two dark chest bands; white eyebrow; dark
stripe across forehead; and short, all-dark bill. A long white stripe was
visible on the upper surface of the wings as the bird flew. Also observed a
Red-bellied Woodpecker investigating cavities in snag.
