Subject: Nesting surprise
We have a small flooded woodland behind our property which is bordered by
agricultural land. It is about 50 yards wide and 1/3 mile long. Every year
we get woodies nesting and also have had mallards, hoodies, and Canada goose
nests. This year, a first, an American wigeon stopped over for a few days.
For the first time in years we have no blue-winged teals.
Today I went for a walk to see if I could spot the goose nest. No luck, but
I found a SANDHILL CRANE nest - first time ever. It is out on a small mossy
patch In the middle of the pond and I could only see one egg - but I was
surprised how big it was.
All in all, a very enjoyable afternoon.
