I found the European Greenfinch coming to the feeders at Bong State Rec Area this morning. Cool bird, even if uncountable by ABA standards. Photo here: http://tinyurl.com/73pkro8 Loved hearing calling and singing Eastern Meadowlarks, Red-winged Blackbirds, and Killdeer. Spotted one very bright Pine Siskin at the feeders, along with several normally colored siskins. I also saw my FOY Common Grackles. So, I've been hearing about the breeder/pet store owner who allegedly released a ton of foreign cage birds some years back, thereby explaining the numbers of interesting European passerines in the upper Midwest ever since. Has this actually been traced to a specific event, and how long ago did it happen? How long do these small songbirds live, and are we still seeing the original escapees?
