All last winter many birders observed a dark morph (Harlan's) red-tailed hawk
in Oak Creek (southern Milwaukee County). We've been seeing it the last couple
of weeks or so again in the exact same area. Jennifer Ambrose and I were
driving down Pennsylvania Avenue between Puetz Road and Ryan Road this
afternoon when we saw the hawk soaring just south of the dance studio, exactly
where we were most likely to see it last year. It is a beautiful hawk,
completely black on its breast. It's so dark that the red tail really stands
out and is quite striking. We didn't get any photos today, but we'll try again.
The area is also great for rough-legged hawks which we've been seeing pretty
regularly. We might have seen one today, but it was far away and we weren't
sure. Lots of regular red-tailed hawks too, and on Old Ryan Road there were two
American Kestrels on the wires, including one we wondered if it was a juvie as
it seemed a little too chill for a kestrel, letting us get relatively close to
get some photographs (to be posted later).
