The staff at Crex Meadows Wildlife Area conducted a count of sandhill cranes at Crex and Fish Lake Wildlife Areas today. There were 12,201 birds counted. There are other birds using the area as well at this time that were not counted. Normally the number of cranes staging in this area increases through October into early November. The best viewing areas are on Main Dike Road on the south side of the Crex refuge. On Fish Lake Wildlife Area the Grettum Flowage over look off Hwy 87 south of Grantsburg offers a good view as well as the south side of the Grettum Flowage refuge off Grettum Dike Road. * Steven R.
