FYI...I heard back from someone with experience doing Christmas Bird Counts in the Bradford Beach area. He said that 5,000 to 8,000 ducks here is pretty typical for a CBC. So I guess my duck counting method isn't too far off. Of course your mileage may vary. My experience with Bradford Beach ducks is that they tend to be strung out in long rafts parallel to the shore, making them easier to count. Not sure how my method would work on inland lakes/ponds/marshes. Bernie Sloan Milwaukee --- On Thu, 12/9/10, B.G. Sloan <bgsloan2@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: From: B.G. I walked the length of the beach several times, and spent some time on the upper deck of the Bradford Beach snack bar for a different vantage point. I'm thinking the raft of ducks was thick enough so that there were easily 5 ducks per linear foot. The raft was maybe 800 feet long, for a total of 4,000 ducks. This made me rethink my duck count from Monday. Monday's raft of ducks was longer (maybe 1500 feet) and thicker. Conservatively keeping the 5-ducks-per-linear-foot measure gives me a count of 7,500 ducks on Monday. I guess my question is: Do these numbers seem unreasonably high? Thanks!
