Those were my best birds of my three day weekend in the far north. Friday Ashland: A three hour stakeout at dawn and another hour at sunset at the Ashland Ore Dock but the Gryfalcon didn't show. The NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD is still surviving in the brushy shoreline east of the ore dock. And a TUNDRA SWAN is in the bit of open water near the powerplant. Also a BALD EAGLE. Washburn: Another two hours looking for the Townsends Solitaire in Mr. Potter's yard also to no avail. But he has a great variety of birds coming to his yard including a BROWN CREEPER, 2 PURPLE FINCHES and an AM ROBIN. Cornucopia: 30 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS moving around the town made the extra drive worthwhile. Saturday 4 Walleye and 15 Northern Pike, Lac Vieux Desert, a successful day on the ice. Sunday The flock of 125 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were found in the crabapple trees on the grounds of the Nicolet Tech College. The Hawk Owl north of Rhinelander was not present this morning. But the best for last, I got a life bird in the VARIED THRUSH that is coming to the Martin's backyard near Merrill. Shortly after I arrived a Coopers Hawk scattered the dozens of birds at their ten+ feeders. Two hours later the male Varied Thrush appeared, what a stunning beauty. Thanks to Ryan Brady, Nick Anich and Nancy Richmond for their advice which made for a successful trip.
