Dear Swift Bird Friends & Wanna-beâs
Itâs time for the 2021 bird migration south, and one of the interesting
examples is the Chimney Swift.
At Waukesha Historical Museum at 101 W Main St. in downtown Waukesha,
Sunday, there were over 1000 swifts, and Monday there were over 1400. This
was spectacular!
Below are listed sites that Iâm aware of but have not checked all of them
out this year.
Thatâs where you come in!
If you want to see some Swifts coming in to roost and do some tallying,
great! See if there is a known site or a place where you and others are
hearing that sweet chittering of the zigzagging flying insectivores!
Typically on a bright sunset evening, the birds may start gathering a bit
before the sunset time, and then start circling around their roost chimney
for the night â bobbing and weaving up to the mouth of the chimney and then
swerving away at the last moment⦠then, all of a sudden, with dusk fast
approaching, they start falling or diving into the mouth of the chimney.
Then⦠Silencio!
Do your best to count, or estimate. For 20-50 swifts you can do that
pretty easy, but when you get to 100âs or over a thousand, you start
counting by 10âs and do your best to tally your results.
For those of you reading this that are around other parts of the state
other than Waukesha please share also. Some of you already are saving data.
Iâve been following the roost site at Okauchee at the old Norris School
where thousands had been seen in years past, and itâs been EMPTY⦠that isâ¦
Until last night when about 300 showed up and went in. Before last night,
there were just single birds while around 200-300 were going into a
previously unknown apartment chimney about 200 yards east. Last night,
around 300 swifts went into both chimneys, giving hope that more will
migrate through for the next few days and use the BIG chimney.
