Chapman Lake in Stanley (eastern Chippewa County), is almost completely drained to replace the dam and dredge the lake. Meanwhile, mudflats are exposed (along with many formerly submerged pilings) and shorebirds have appeared. Shorebirds are generally difficult to find in Chippewa County. Tonight I found the following on the south end of the lake near the dam: 2 Semipalmated Plovers 1 Greater Yellowlegs 2 Lesser Yellowlegs 2 or 3 Solitary Sandpipers 1 Pectoral Sandpiper 2 Least Sandpipers 2 or 3 Killdeer 1 Belted Kingfisher 21 Canada Geese I especially enjoyed being able to share my spotting scope views with a local resident who had come to take pictures.
