Jim Otto and I went up to Portage & Juneau Counties today. We started at Buena Vista - while we missed seeing any Prairie Chickens, we heard/saw lots of Bobolinks, Grasshopper, Savannah & Clay-colored Sparrows, Dickcissels, and both Meadowlarks. At the Kingston Pines SNA north of Mather in Juneau Co., we heard/saw Veeries, Hermit Thrushes, Pine and Black & White Warblers, Ovenbirds, C. Yellowthroats, Red-eyed and Blue-headed Vireos, a Scarlet Tanager and a pair of C. Ravens. Had a large accipiter over Kingston Flowage that gave us some pause, but I believe it was a big female Cooper's Hawk. Dragonflies were very abundant there - picked up my "lifer" Frosted Whiteface. Along Cranberry Rd., we saw a pair of Trumpeter Swans with a brood of cygnets - they would have been on the Jackson County side of the road. At Necedah, the east side of the Sprague-Mather Flowage is drawn completely down - just a few channels of water left. There were three Whooping Cranes out there among the Sandhills and Canada Geese, and a single Trumpeter Swan on the west side. One the road south of the flowage, we saw a Ruffed Grouse with a brood.
