I was also there. And had similar results. Had 46 Prairie Chickens, so= uth
of W and just east of Taft. I only saw 8 ,on Mill Road. I was hoping to=
findredpoll flocks, so I could search for a Hoary. I didn=E2=80=99t find =
any.
I went down to Leola Marsh. On Apache Road, I= only saw 1 shrike and 1
raven.I couldn=E2=80=99t find any Red-headed Wood= peckers, in the area of
Apache and 9th.
= I headed to Necedah WF, to look for grouse and Red-headed Woodpeckers.
The=re was a small group of Tree Sparrows ,as I turned in. I didn=E2=80=99t
see= another bird till I was leaving the area, on 20th. Then I saw a= group
of turkeys.
Just east of Necedah, by the Ye= llow River, there was a nice adult
Red-shouldered Hawk.

County= )
I= often have had difficulty in recent years finding Greater
Prairie-Chickens= at Buena Vista during winter, but today I had good luck
just after my arri= val at about 8:40 A.M. I drove west on Mill Road from
Taft Road, and on the= field north of Mill Road and east of Farmers Road, I
was able to observe 7= 5 scattered across that field. I brought my car to a
slow stop and was able= to observe them for several minutes. However, when I
restarted my car, all= but a couple of the birds took flight to destinations
unknown, so they wer= e rather skittish.
Those were the only Prairie-Chic= kens I saw today but I had a few other
interesting sightings as I drove aro= und. On the south side of Lake Road,
west of Taft Road but well east of the= house on the road, I saw a Snowy Owl
perched on a rise far back in the fie= ld. A Northern Shrike was perched
highin a tree on Swamp Rd., west of Taft= Road. An adult Bald Eagle was
perched on the west side of CTH F, south of = CTH W. I was surprised to see
only one Rough-legged Hawk, and that was near= the intersection of Swamp and
Taft Rds. It quickly flew east, probably to = hunt.
I was disappointed not to see Snow Buntings o= r Common Redpolls which are
usually common in the grasslands in winter, but= =C2=A0 overall very pleased
with my trip today.
