On my way to work this morning, I reconnoitered the Milwaukee Juneau Park
Lagoon just north of the Milwaukee Art Museum, next to Veteran's Park.
The Black Crowned Night Herons have been having repeat visits to this area
over past years, and there've even been some Yellow Crowned in the past.
In scouting the east side of the Lagoon from parking on Lincoln Memorial
Drive, this Heron was sitting hunched on a low branch, a foot above the
water, nearer the south end, but still under the tall trees. It's in the
40's and the wind is low, and some sun...He's not a big guy (or gal), but
bigger than most other bush birds, no neck, and it looks like a gray
football stretched out with a black cap. Last year BCNH were seen at the
Lagoon by March 27, so with our unique Wisconsin weather this year, maybe
the migration is behind, but I haven't been down to the lagoon since last
Thursday, so not really sure when he flew in.
