I missed the chat at Bender though I thought I might have briefly heard one
a lot farther to the east in the scrubby habitat above the bluff. Jeremy
said there might possibly be 2 there, but unless 1 decides to establish a
territory, it will probably require luck to see one.
While walking a short distance (.1-.2 mi) north on the first main trail
leaving the Oakwood Road path, I had great looks at a (FOY) Bell's Vireo. It
was kind enough to sing a few phrases for me to confirm my identification! I
also had great looks at 2 Golden-winged Warblers, but I can't supply a
location since I was just wandering one of the many informal trails much
farther to the north and probably couldn't get back to the exact spot even
if I tried. At this time of year, I think it is unusual for a migrating
warbler to remain in the same spot for very long. Total warbler count for me
was 12 at Bender with my favorite being a singing Northern Parula. Palm
Warblers were very abundant.
After some lunch, I went to Whitnall Park where Jim Edlhuber had made
beautiful warbler photographs. I saw the same species as he did with
Wilson's and Chestnut-sided being FOY for me. I was hoping to find a
Prothonotary Warbler which is regular there during migration, and wouldn't
you know it, when I got to the wooden bridge at the west end of Mallard
Lake, I found Jeremy Meyer and he pointed out a close Prothonotary which
lingered as long as we were there. He had also seen a female Cerulean
Warbler, and we didn't have to wait too long for it to make a return
appearance. American Redstart, Orange-crowned Warbler, Black-and-White
Warbler, and Common Yellowthroat gave some great looks while Baltimore
Oriole, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and Warbling Vireo provided the background
music.
It was a great day to be birding and I hope this activity continues.
