There was a nice bright Red-necked Grebe out amongst the thousands of ducks at the head of Chequamegon Bay this morning. Yesterday I had 7 Ruddy Ducks behind the Lake Superior Lodge (Ruddys are rarer than you'd think up north). All of the regular divers and dabblers are present, and there are a good 1500-2000 ducks within scope view, and plenty more farther out. To my knowledge, nobody has seen the Barrow's Goldeneye in the last few days. Nick Anich Ashland, WI Subject: Ashland/Bayfield From: Ryan Brady <ryanbrady10 AT hotmail.com> Date: Wed, 13 Apr 2011 10:16:13 -0600 I also ran my Red-shouldered Hawk survey route west of Mellen in Ashland County on Tuesday morning. Not unexpectedly I had no Red-shouldereds but a Cooper's Hawk responded agressively to the playback at one point. Lots of snow melt and soft roads but woodland birds just trickling in. Full ebird list from the 12 stops is below, which should be a decent representation of where things are at migration-wise in the far northwoods. And perhaps most significantly, my car did not do as fine as Nancy's and I got stuck in the mud until rescued a few hours later. Back in Ashland, ice on Chequamegon Bay is finally out. Thousands of ducks piled onto the west end, well out from Long Bridge, with good diversity but dominated by scaup as usual. First Bonaparte's Gulls today. Nick Anich scoped the birds harder and will have something to add I'm sure. A flock of 250+ Bohemian Waxwings continues on Ashland's west side. Also 15 Common Redpolls in Washburn this morning. First dragonflies of the year yesterday and dozens of butterflies. Lots of frogs now, including this Wood Frog: http://www.pbase.com/rbrady/image/133892884 Ryan Brady Washburn, Bayfield County, WI http://www.pbase.com/rbrady -------------------------------- Observation date: 4/12/11 Number of species: 40 Canada Goose 17 Mallard 7 Common Merganser 1 Ruffed Grouse 13 Common Loon 2 Turkey Vulture 1 Cooper's Hawk 1 Sandhill Crane 1 Mourning Dove 1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 15 Downy Woodpecker 1 Hairy Woodpecker 2 Northern Flicker (Yellow-shafted) 4 Pileated Woodpecker 1 Eastern Phoebe 7 Blue Jay 7 American Crow 12 Common Raven 4 Tree Swallow 1 Black-capped Chickadee 10 Red-breasted Nuthatch 9 White-breasted Nuthatch 3 Brown Creeper 4 Winter Wren 5 Golden-crowned Kinglet 4 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Hermit Thrush 2 American Robin 36 Yellow-rumped Warbler (Myrtle) 9 American Tree Sparrow 1 Fox Sparrow 8 Song Sparrow 9 Dark-eyed Junco (Slate-colored) 12 Red-winged Blackbird 7 Common Grackle 2 Brown-headed Cowbird 3 Purple Finch 10 White-winged Crossbill 1 Common Redpoll 3 American Goldfinch 2 This report was generated automatically by eBird v2(http://ebird.org/wi) #################### You received this email because you are subscribed to the Wisconsin Birding Network (Wisbirdn).
