[wisb] Re: Alert: GARGANEY -- reported in Crex Meadows

Twenty years ago, the only way vagrants were reported was via the hotline.
As technology has changed, so have the reporting processes. First came
WISBIRD, then Facebook, and now there are even text alerts that you can
sign up for. The only officially recognized reporting system for WSO is
either right from their webpage or through eBird. WISBIRN IS LISTED AS
"OTHER PLACES TO REPORT SIGHTINGS." In addiction to the elitist Wisconsin
Birding Facebook page(nearly 2500 members) that Chris was referring to,
there is also a Birding Wisconsin Facebook page, and countless other pages
for individual bird clubs or locations throughout Wisconsin. Several
people only want to belong to one such group, others are members of
several. Some people have privacy concerns with Facebook, or don't have a
cell phone to use text services. Others don't like the lag time that can
be as much as a few hours from Free Lists or do not want the viruses that
go out when someones email has been hacked. Others don't use any
technology at all, and keep their observations to themselves.
Sunil posted about the Garganey to the list serve, as soon as it was
reported to Facebook, and Tom P did the same thing today. I cross posted
the Spotted Towhee at Nine Springs a few weeks ago as soon as the photo was
posted on the Wisconsin Birding Facebook page. That said, most birders
that are members of multiple groups readily cross post information between
the groups so the most birders can see the information. It is time to
embrace the technology available to us to support birding and bird
conservation.
