UTILITIES - OPTIMIZERS & DIAGNOSTICS - REGISTRY - CleanUp! - clean-up junk files

CleanUp! - Do you want to clean up your disk but don't know where to start?
CleanUp! was designed for people like you. CleanUp! is a powerful and
easy-to-use application that removes temporary files created while surfing the
web, empties the Recycle Bin, deletes files from your temporary folders
including removing "MRU lists" (storing a list of your Most Recently Used
files) for various applications, emptying the Recent Documents folder, deleting
entries from the Run and Find Computer dialogs, emptying Recycle Bins, emptying
temporary folders, removing some unneeded registry entries and securely delete
files making it impossible to retrieve their contents using lower-level disk
tools. Free. No limitations. Windows XP (any edition), 2000 (Professional,
Server or Advanced Server), NT 4.0 (Workstation or Server), ME, 98, 95. -

I clean up all my temporary files at least once a day, I only allow cookies to
exist for the session. All the crap that is held on your computer is supposed
to speed up browsing because they in theory don't need to download this again
the next time you visit the site. When you look in the Windows picture and fax
viewer you see them all. I run Cleanup! at least once a day on my XP machines.
I have been criticised for saying that keeping your computer running well and
infection free is simply commonsense, but the only thing about sense in all
its' guises is that is a lot more uncommon than expected. People put off doing
simple things that may take in total a small amount of time daily, and then
they spend hours or days trying to put things right that are simply caused by
neglect. Unfortunately people get in trouble with computers both through what
they do and what they fail to do. - Paris, AZTEC

CNET editors' review - This fast freeware file cleaner clears your system of
certain junk files, but it doesn't ask permission before deletion. CleanUp's
multitabbed dialog-size interface needs little explanation. It takes just a
minute of setting options and this program is set for system cleaning. CleanUp
operates best when set for daily cleaning. It removes junk files quickly, and
it can be easily set to operate silently. The program empties the Recycle Bin,
deletes newsgroup subscriptions and cache, eats cookies, forgets favorite
places, and will even reset some game scores. With one click it will wipe,
rather than simply delete, files. Customizing cleaning of select folders and
Registry entries is also a quick and painless process. As a matter of fact,
setting options is so easy one forgets this program will delete files without
pause. Similar apps list files set for deletion to give users the opportunity
to select which will be deleted. The program only offers a demo mode to show
what files would be deleted during the normal run, but there's no option to
save select files when its in actual use. This freeware is best suited for
experienced users, who will quickly find the proper customization options for
their systems to make CleanUp a fine daily tool to remove select temp files. -

Please see known issues below before downloading. While we experienced no
problems with CleanUp!, you should still be aware of possible issues. CleanUp!
is a powerful and easy-to-use application that removes temporary files created
while surfing the web, empties the Recycle Bin, deletes files from your
temporary folders and more. CleanUp! frees disk space and reduces the "clutter"
on your computer helping it to run more efficiently. It also can be used as a
way to protect your privacy on the Internet. You can even instruct CleanUp! to
securely delete files making it impossible to retrieve their contents using
lower-level disk tools - just another way of protecting your privacy. No
gimmicks here, CleanUp! is so easy to set up and use that you'll have a lean,
clean, mean machine in minutes. Known issues/bugs: Under some - not all -
configurations of Windows XP enabling the option "Scan local drives for
temporary files" can result in some required system files being deleted. This
has been identified as a problem for Microsoft Office 2003 users. [Solution:
disable this option.]; In Outlook Express (and possibly Outlook too), any
folders containing a "." in the name get deleted when the "Delete Newsgroup
Cache" option is enabled; While the executable may appear to run under Windows
XP Professional 64 bit edition, some initial tests suggest a problem deleting
needed files. Therefore do not attempt to run CleanUp! 4.0 under 64 bit Windows
XP Professional. All 32 bit versions of Windows XP work fine; The list of
cookies to keep is case-sensitive which may lead to some cookies being deleted
when you'd expect them to be preserved. The solution for now is to pay careful
attention to the case of the cookies. The next version of CleanUp! will provide
a fix for this. - MajorGeeks.com

Warning! Back up your data and/or set a restore point before installing new
programs or running any cleaners, as deleting necessary files will disable your
computer. Infected websites and downloads are more likely now than ever. Before
downloading files make sure your virus scanner is updated and always scan a
download before installing. - Gene
