I agree on the advantages of NTFS and such and the advantage of =
installing Win2k on its own partition.

Here is the situation with my friend's computer. It is complicated by =
the fact that has is on the other side of the state from me and I can =
not sit down at it and do this myself.

It is an older Gateway PC (P3 300 mhz, recently upgraded to 256MB ram) =
that came with Win98 preinstalled. Now that it has a few years on it =
Win98 is freezing, crashing etc. I recommended he try windows 2000 and =
just let it upgrade. He gets an error that tells him he can't do that. =
So I told him to reboot the computer with the Wn2k disk in the drive and =
we would try for a dual boot. Win2k setup does not seem to thing he has =
any partitions and wants to format the drive.

It seems like FAT16 may be the problem based on the posts so far. FAT12 =
was a new one to me too (the things I learn these days).

How reliable/safe is running the conversion to Fat32. He has applied =
all the updates to Win98 from Windows Update.

I think you can install both Win9X and Win2k in the same directory as =
long as the partition is FAT. And make sure that the system folder for =
both OSes are not the same so that the files that are named the same =
will not overwrite each other. But the best approach is to install them =
in separate partitions to avoid cross contamination and maintaining the =
primary partition as FAT.
  Angus Macdonald <angus.Macdonald@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote:=20
If the HDD is not FAT or FAT32, Win98 will not be able to use it.

The best way to setup a dual-boot system is to install win98 first, then
W2K. W2K will spot the win98 installation, leave it alone (as long as =
you
don't install W2K in the samne directory) and create a suitable boot =
menu.

I am trying to help a friend of mine set this up. It worked great when =
=3D
I set it up for myself but on his it says his C drive is unformatted and =
=3D
has no partitions.

Does win98 need to be FAT32 first for Win2k to recognize it?
