It isn't normal, but I would not kill it unless it was extremely necessary..
nevertheless, here goes the last resort... (yes! it works!)

Subject: [windows2000] Demoting a DC seems to be taking way too long

I'm trying to demote a domain controller on a server which is really old.
I've moved everything off of it which is of any importance, and am running
DCPROMO now. I started it several hours ago. It is stuck at a message box
(I can't really call it an alert box or dialog box, because there is no way
I can OK or cancel out of it). The title of the message box is,
"Configuring Active Directory...", and the text of the message box is:

"The wizard is configuring Active Directory. This process can take several
minutes or considerably longer, depending on the options you have selected.

Completing demotion for the Directory Service, SAM and LSA."

As I said, this one message box has been up for almost 4 hours. I've
checked the task manager and it is not stuck; it shows DCPROMO as being
active and running. I have checked the event logs and, at least for me, I
cannot see anything obvious that would be causing the delay.

I would like to know if there is something wrong, or if this is normal?
