Here's what is happening at or around Whitman Elementary:
 

School Smarts Parent Academy

We are in Week 6 of the 7-week program.  We thank those that have been there
 from the beginning.  Class is still on for tonight, March 3, starting at 5:30
pm
in Room 9.  Childcare is in Room A1.  An ELAC Information Meeting will precede
 this evening’s session.

Mission Federal Banking Day

Every Wednesday starting at 8:30 am in the Lunch Arbor (unless announced over
 the loud speaker system)

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Career and College Transition Fair

Tools for School: Keeping Kids Safe Online Seminar

SDCCU® Administrative Office
6545 Sequence Drive, San Diego (off Mira Mesa Boulevard)

SDCCU is hosting a FREE Tools for Schools Seminar Series: Keeping Kids Safe
 Online, hosted by San Diego Police Foundation’s Director of Safety Net Darlene
Kanzler, at the SDCCU Administrative Office on Wednesday, March 11 at 6 p.m.
 Attendees can learn about protecting privacy while using social networking
sites, fighting back against cyberbullying, staying safe from online predators
 and much more.

Seating is limited and reservations are required. Attendees can visit

We’ll be meeting to discuss details of the School Smarts Parent Academy

Community Advisory Committee (CAC) Meeting
March 12, 20157:00 pm
Ballard Center in Old town

Community Advisory Committee for Special Education (CAC). The meeting is this
 coming Thursday, March 12, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. We will be meeting at the Harold
J.
Ballard Parent Center Auditorium Located at 2375 Congress St. (92110) in Old
 Town.

This month's PRESENTATION will be on

A-G graduation requirements, Individualized Transition Plan's, and different
pathways to a diploma

Childcare and Spanish interpreters will be provided at the meeting.  If you need
 translation in a language other than Spanish, please contact the Special Ed
Office as soon as possible at 619.725.7700. I hope to see you there!

The CAC Above and Beyond Awards will be given on May 14th. Do you know someone
 that has been exemplary in his/her commitment to improve educational outcomes
of
students with disabilities? For more information and to submit a nomination,
 please email cac2015awards@xxxxxxxxx. Nominations are due no later than March
26th.

Shining Star Ceremony

This is Whitman’s monthly student achievement assembly completely run by the
Whitman ASB 
Easter Egg Hunts
There are a few recreation centers in Clairemont featuring a fun Easter Egg
Hunt.  See attached flyer for details.
 
Whitman PTA Spring Fundraisers!

We are featuring two fundraisers.  One featuring spirit gear where you can order
 Whitman Spirit Gear and chose from six different items and they come is various
sizes (except for the backpack).  You can view the sizing charts and order

The other fundraiser is featuring the Spring Delights Catalog, ideal for your
 student's family and friends.  Whitman PTA hopes to raise monies to put towards
digital speed signs on Appleton Street and we appreciate all of your support.

Fast Times 5k and Clairemont Day at the Bay
The third annual event featuring a 5k race followed by a community family

Community Programs
Be sure to visit the San Diego Public Library North Clairemont Branch as they
 offer tutoring for students every day but Friday.
 
2016-2017 School Calendar  Changes

San Diego Unified is considering a proposal to change the first day of school
 from the Tuesday after Labor Day to the last week in August. This change is
proposed to take effect in the 2016-17 school year. The proposed start date is
 August 29, 2016 for all schools, with an end date of June 14, 2017 for
traditional calendar schools and an end date of July 21, 2017 for year-round
 schools.

Kohl’s $10,000 Scholarship!

Kohl's Department Stores Accepting Nominations for 2015 Scholarships

DEADLINE: MARCH 13, 2015

Kohl's Department Stores is accepting nominations for the 2015 Kohl’s Cares
 Scholarships, an annual program that recognizes youth between the ages of 6 and
18 who, through their voluntarism, have had a positive impact on their
 communities.

Winners will be chosen based on the benefits and outcomes of their volunteer
 service. Nominators must be 21 or older.

To be eligible, students must be between the ages of 6 and 18 as of March 15,
 2015, and not yet a high school graduate. In addition, the student's volunteer
efforts must have occurred in the last year.

Scholarships and prizes will be awarded at three levels: Store winners,  each of
 whom will receive a $50 Kohl’s Gift Card; regional winners, each of whom will
be
awarded a $1,000 scholarship  toward their post-secondary education; and
 national winners,  each of whom will receive a $10,000 scholarship, and an
award
of $1,000 forthe nonprofit organization of their choice.

Scholarship awards must be used for educational expenses at a qualifying
 institution. These expenses may include tuition, fees, room and board, books
and
supplies, transportation, and other miscellaneous education-related expenses.
