Dear Whitman Families and Friends,

Whitman PTA hopes you are enjoying your summer.  Here are few things that may be
of interest to you about what you can do over the summer.

Whitman Elementary Extended School Year (Summer School)
Begins July 24, 2014 for students that are enrolled to be in the ESY 2014.

San Diego Public Library Summer Reading Program.  This is a free reading program
going on through the summer.  You can subscribe your child online or visit your
local branch to pick up a reading log.  You reader will get a bag of goodies
completing 10 hours of reading or reading 10 books.   For the North Clairemont
Branch, they will be having a magic show today at 4 pm and there is a special
event happening every Wednesday at 4 pm until August 13, 2014.  You can also
check with your local branch as all branches of SDPL will be participating in
the summer reading program as well as summer activities.  Visit the SDPL website

Summer Fun Cafe
North Clairemont Rec Center (located on Bannock Street) and Whitman Elementary
will be participating in offering free lunches for children under 18 starting on
July 22, 2014.  No enrollment, no registration, no income verification.  North
Clairemont will be offering lunch from 12 pm - 1 pm, Whitman Elementary will be
offering breakfast from 8:45 am - 9:05 am and lunch at 12 pm - 12:30 pm.

South Clairemont Rec Center will be hosting a BBQ from 12 pm - 1 pm tomorrow,
July 17, where adults can get a meal for $2, there will also be activities for
the kids, and you can get a bag of fruits or vegetables being offered by the San
Diego Food Bank.  go to www.sandi.net/food for more info.

"Be a Winner.... Take a Stroll/Swim in the Park"
For all ages
July 14 - Aug 14, 2014
Walk 30 miles in 30 days or swim 20 miles in 30 days.
Participants must enroll at any local City of San Diego Park and Rec or Pool.
 Each participant will receive a Parks Fit San Diego bracelet. Participants who
complete the challenge will receive a commemorative "I Got Fit i my Park in 30
days" t-Shirt.  Participants can walk/swim independently on their own time and
at their own pace, or in a group led by Park and Rec staff.  Walk and swim
schedules are available at all City re Centers and Pools.  Deadline to enroll is
August 1.

BBQ Community Eevnt
Jul 18th - 11 am - 2:30 pm only!
Kids eat free, adults pay $2

Have the opportunity to meet a tru NASA Astonaut - Rex Walheim.  There are a
schedule set of activities from 11 am - 2:30 pm including interactive activities
for kids and train like an Astronaut!

Fairytales in the Park

Wind your way through the spellbound forest and watch as the stories of
"Cinderella", "Hansel and Gretel," "The Emperor and the Nightingale," and "The
Sleeping Beauty" come alive on stage.  The whimsical, interactive performance
merges the beauty of ballet with the excitement of unforgettable stories.  After
the performance, visit "Fairy Tale Village" for free interactive activities like
face painting, crafts, photos, play , and more!

variety of activities and putting together the proposed budget for the Whitman
