For those who may be interested, I use NordVPN as the software that
provides my computers (2) and my phone with a VPN and I have found this
to be a very good addition to my security as well as solving the issue
with WBS. When using the VPN and using servers in the US I've found very
little change in latency (using servers in, say, Finland changes the
latency a bit because of the distance factor). I'm not sure if the
"deal" is still on but, I paid $107 for three years and the ability to
place the software on 6 devices. I did decide not to put it on my router
for the reasons described earlier on this list. There is an informative
website that I've discovered that may provide the curious with
information about IP addresses, VPNs and the like. Try going to
whatismyipaddress.com.
As for my router's security, I have changed the router's password (as
well as the network's password) to something significantly unsimple (if
I can use that word) to the extent that I have to write it down and go
to it every time I need to access my router. My router also allows me to
keep any devices, that I have not specifically allowed, from using the
network. For instance, when my daughter wanted to use her phone to get
on our network, despite me giving her the password for the network she
was still unable to get on the network because I had not set the router
to accept her device.
