The knitting season is upon us (although really, every season is knitting
season!!)! I have found a pair of websites for donating items if you just
love to knit or crochet but don't have a recipient in mind. My stash is
becoming SABLE - *S*tash *A*cquisition *B*eyond *L*ife *E*xpectancy - so
I'm looking for ways to use up some yarn.
Warm Up America: https://warmupamerica.org accepts all kinds of items. My
favorite idea is their 7" x 9" rectangles. Send them rectangles and they
send them out to volunteer teams who assemble blankets to give away. I am
finding this useful for using up skeins where there is not really enough
for an item, but could make a small rectangle. It looks like they prefer
worsted weight acrylic so created blankets end up uniform and washable, but
if you want to make a blanket with something else and donate it, they
accept it. Go to their website for more specific guidelines. If you want to
join me in creating rectangles, I can be a collecting site, just let me
know and I will figure out a collection box.
Alice's Embrace: https://alicesembrace.org/ This organization distributes
lap blankets and prayer shawls to Alzheimer's patients (though they
adjusted their focus during this time of COVID). This organization is
particular about their patterns, but garter stitch (knit every row) is an
accepted stitch.
