The Milkweed in Fall by Maine Poet - Clarine Grenfell
"Will God who hides seeds for a hundred springs,
Neglect to send, when my fall comes,
The necessary wings?
No, he will not."
Friday I had collected a milkweed pod filled with seeds, intending to use it
for a storytelling that evening, but didn't. It sat on my counter. After the
weekend's events, it's as if the pod of seeds whispered to me: "let us go
free over Seago's homesite, inviting butterflies in the fall." So I called
some folk on Monday to go with me, but no one was at home, so I drove up
Richmond Rd. solo. I stood by the driveway noticing the beauty of the woods
and started to "fly" the seeds, but the wind carried them all toward the
homesite and fields. Those white silken-parachuted seeds silently floated
like all of our prayers and scurrying to help the family. In silence I
returned to my car, but not before giving the twin oaks a big hug. Peace.
