Sorry for the delayed response. A member of the WCS preservation Committee,
Jennifer Core, is doing research/investigating the idea of WCS as an
independent school, heading up a subcommittee on that topic. She is
exploring how the Warwick school worked prior to the formation of the
current PVRS district, as well as independent options such as Charter
Schools. Tom Ziniti shared on facebook recently that " Charter schools are
public schools of choice, meaning that families choose them for their
children. They operate with freedom from some of the regulations that are
imposed upon district schools. Charter schools are accountable for academic
results and for upholding the promises made in their charters...A Horace
Mann II charter school is an option for schools that currently operate as
regular public schools." A year or so ago, the Town Coordinator did some
research on Charter Schools and meetings were held with Town & district
officials. It is important that this option is thoroughly checked out.

Gregory, I'm not sure if you are thinking Charter Schools when you
suggest private
education, or something else. All school-age children who live in
Massachusetts are entitled to attend a public school free of charge. A town
can choose to pay tuition to send students to a school in another town or
district and parents can choose to do the same (and the town will have to
pay the tuition for that). I don't know whether it is acceptable to send
students to a private school as a replacement for local public education.

"Going it on our own" seems attractive when you think of the local control
and reduced transportation. But there are realities that have to be
considered: special needs (all it takes is one student needing one-on-one
support to derail a budget), state mandates for educational standards, and
where to educate students in grades 7-12. This committee is researching
many options in an open-ended way, hoping there is a way to sustain WCS for
the foreseeable future. If we think outside the box and work together to
