Quoting narguimbau@xxxxxxxxxxxxx:

I remember when the Select Board voted for the black-and-white speed limit signs, I held up the vote by insisting that the Chief come into the meeting and state that the department policy would be to ticket speeders exceeding the official limits by the slimmest of amounts, e.g. to ticket someone going 46 in a 45 mph zone. There was a consensus that if this policy were followed and it was made known the speeders would slow up. It sounds to me that the policy has been forgotten. There was also discussion of putting signs on all incoming roads at the borders, "Speed limits strictly enforced." A good idea in my mind.

By the by, I live about 600 feet from Rte 78 on Kirk Rd and have trained my cat never to go more than 100 feet in the direction of 78, She's small, calico with white underside and white paws. Maybe she cheats when I'm not around .If anyone sees her near 78, please let me know. narguimbau@xxxxxxxxxxxxx, 544-3407. It might be helpful if everyone would note loose cats or dogs on any of the main roads and submit their descriptions here.

Miryam has a good idea. If car descriptions were included, then the lists could be turned in to the police department to tell them whom to be on the lookout for.

imagine this information would be usable for a speeding ticket, but
I'll bet seeing one of us would slow folks down to a reasonable speed.

I'd take a shift -- more than one, actually, but only for a hour at a
time. What do you think? If this idea isn't good enough, can you
suggest a way to make it better?

Could the select board consider that those speeders are revenue
generators for the town if we invest in a police team that enables
officers to show up for court dates so as to collect on speeding
tickets? So many people are speeding through our town, if we issued
tickets and showed up to court dates, I would imagine this would
help pay for the police team in town. This issue should not be
framed within the confines of a budget constraint but rather, an
opportunity to keep our community safer and generate revenue to
offset our budget for police. -j

Greetings, all;

The Board of Selectmen will have a discussion about this. I'll have
David put it on the agenda, and ask Chief Shoemaker to come in to
brainstorm. I know there are budget constraints that prevent us from
having speed checks set up all over the place. We have a part-time
chief and six or eight officers on call for shifts; but like I said,
there are budget constraints. We'll see what we can do.

In the meantime, with the beautiful weather we've been having
lately, why would anyone want to rush through it?

People constantly speed and I would say 50 mph is the norm. It's
more the exception to see someone going the speed limit. We've lost
pets and the drivers don't even bother to stop while our dying or
dead pet lies in the road. We've spoken to the police on numerous
occasions over the 12 years we've lived here, even offering to let
them use our driveway to watch for speeders, but they haven't taken
us up on it. It's very distressing. I have given up complaining to
the police since they don't seem to care.

Where is the traffic control here. When I walk the dogs daily, there
are always speeders. Sometimes I have to walk way off the edge of
the road because they don’t move over or slow down. What is the
hurry. Guess it will take a real tragedy for some. When I have
yelled at some to slow down, they do not bother to.

I would like to add that the same is true of traffic past our place
at the corner of Wendell and Northfield Rd. whether going straight
down Wendell or making the curve to go Northfield Rd. Thank you to
all of you who obey the posted speed limit or even close to it.
Grandchildren and pets appreciate it! To say nothing of us "old
folks"!! 😂With our property on both sides of the road it is
difficult to cross safely when people come around that corner going
50-55 which seems to be the norm! Many close calls and several lost
pets to that! No human lives injured or lost, YET!!! Again, thank
you to those of you who go at a reasonable speed and help to keep us
safe!
