Well. Duncan decided to explore the bottom of the pond right in the middle
of the densest collection of guessing times in the whole contest. Our best
composite information now suggests that the plunge took place after 12:00
(seen up on his pedestal by Robin, our postal deliverer, at that time) and
before 1:00 (Cary Noel confirms that the Duncan was below at that time).
The problem is that we have parties who submitted guesses for 12:00 and
1:00. 12:30 is our fulcrum of decision.
I paddled out there through the slush today and recovered the timer that
was set with the whole assembly. It is the cheapest analog watch I could
find at our local big box store, the idea being that when it went under the
battery would flood and stop the watch at the moment of immersion. When I
bought it I made sure that it did not specify that it was waterproof. I was
confident that this would settle the uncertainty and I could announce a
winner.
IT WAS STILL TICKING. Accurately. Fully submerged. How cheap does one have
to go to get a lousy device? I should return it ranting and raving, "I want
my seven bucks back. It still runs!" Well, you get what you pay for, I
guess.
So. I'll give another couple of days for any more specific crowdsourcing.
If anyone remembers passing Moore's Pond between noon and one on Monday,
April 1 and they noticed the dog up or down, please contact me before
Friday at jimmcraejim@gmail. Otherwise we'll have to declare a kind of
unsatisfying tie. Jim
