Collaboration and stakeholder participation are seen as important ways to address environmental issues, such as water pollution, that cross existing government boundaries. Along with changes in policy and management have come research studies focusing on these phenomena. This presentation discusses the evolution of social science research on collaborative watershed management (CWM) in the U.S. It also presents some initial findings from a current research study of collaborative watershed planning under the E.U. Water Framework Directive in Germany. About the presenter: Tomas Koontz is Associate Professor of Environmental and Natural Resources Policy at Ohio State University. With his Environmental Social Sciences colleagues in the School of Environment and Natural Resources, he investigates human behaviors, communities, and institutions linked to the environment. Following his doctoral studies at Indiana University, where he studied common-pool resources and forest institutions under the direction of Elinor Ostrom, he has conducted research on collaborative environmental management and U.S. environmental policy. Currently, Prof. Koontz is a visiting scholar at Leuphana University in Lueneburg, Germany, with the Governance and Sustainability group at the Institute for Environmental and Sustainability Communication.
