There are no talking monitors to my knowledge that do not require finger
pricking. There is a product being used in Israel that is an ear clip blood
glucose monitor – I do not remember the name. Many products made in other
countries never come to the U.S. nor pass our FDA.

There was a talking monitor out of Britain that I used to mention in my
writings and workshops but I learned my lesson after mentioning it in a book
chapter that I wrote – 3 years being evaluated by the FDA and it never passed.
It was widely used in Britain and was as good as what we have in talking
monitors here in the U.S. The FDA and cost can inhibit new products coming to
market in the U.S..

So I just wait until I hear the FDA is considering it before I mention products
that never come to fruition.

By the way many diabetes educators discussed this ear clip in our technology
practice group – until they say it is here and evaluate it for its’ reliability
(the FDA is more lenient with blood glucose monitor error rates than educators
are) I will wait to talk about it.

Right now we have what we have and we can only choose the best we can and also
ensure that it is covered by the clients insurance. You have to teach your
client how to best understand and work with the product they can obtain.

Subject: [visionrehabtherapist] Talking glucometer

Is anyone aware of a talking glucometer that the individual can roll across
their fingers, rather than finger pricking, to get a blood sugar reading? A
consumer told me she had heard about such a device on television.

Thank you,

Eileen
