Virtual Session: Implications of Macular Degeneration and Eccentric Viewing for
Vision Rehabilitation Therapists
Presenter: Karen Cote
Karen Shane Cote, CLVT, an authority on low vision and its implications for
vision services, will present the implications of macular degeneration and
teaching eccentric viewing for VRTs working with clients in the field.
During this session, you will learn:
* Basic considerations for working on skill development for those with macular
degeneration
* To better understand the impact of macular degeneration for providing VRT
services particularly teaching clients eccentric viewing.
* Basic considerations for creating kits for teaching eccentric viewing.
About the Presenter
Karen Cote has been in the field of vision rehabilitation for 43 years. During
that time, she has co-authored books, written articles, contributed to text
books and lectured nationally and internationally (in Canada, China, India and
the Philippines for the Hilton Perkins Project). Karen has a Master's Degree
from Boston College. She originally was an O&M instructor. In 1975, she
directed a federal grant for the evaluation and stimulation of children with
visual impairment with severe disabilities. Look At Me and I Wanna Do It
Myself: A manual for families of children functioning at lower levels were
co-authored by Karen. She has participated in creating the Beta test in Low
Vision Certification of ACVREP.
During her career, Karen has worked as adjunct staff of UMASS and Salus
University. She has worked in eye doctor's offices, for private agencies and
for the Division for the Blind and Visually Impaired of Maine where she helped
develop a curriculum and techniques for consumer classes. During that time,
Karen taught a week long class in Low Vision for each of the 5 regions in
Maine. She has worked as the Deaf/Blind consultant for Maine from Perkins New
England Deaf Blind Center.
Professionally, Karen has chaired both the national and regional Low Vision
Division of AERBVI. Presently, she is the Low Vision Therapist at the Iris
Rehabilitation Center in Portland, ME and also assists with outreach for the
Iris Network Rehabilitation Center.
Believing holistically, Karen has combined all of her knowledge and experience,
not only to help her consumers, but to help steward the new generation in the
field of Low Vision.
