Hopefully this won't happen in our state, but time will tell.

It's nearly Independence Day and thousands of nonprofit jobs are at immediate risk in Minnesota.

The state of Minnesota has shut down today and advocates are projecting that it may last as long as two or three months. This means that the contracts that nonprofits have with the state to provide services to those already suffering with the effects of the recession will be at the very least delayed, and potentially completely eliminated, but, and here is the rub, nobody will know which it is -- the shutdown or the recession.

READ WHAT THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN IN MINNESOTA MEANS FOR NONPROFITS AND COMMUNITIES <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=zbprzzbab&et=1106340210932&s=41311&e=001UaSWzEQl6zOhZw8l0OC0hpIg2DoQGSsiOWwAixpxKeVEWRSutcuxC7KLkXjQKrqQYMN8s4c-7EGUZzbReFLMoI6arsMeQDH7_ICOAS115d7VtINUfuJHA10Y1eQ-7m2-hvLF9jXoN-N112pCVj29gUD5jM3eTwc-gwdN4Vth7GIeKikg2ob5ncF-36PY7b12MIw5-ZMGYaHP38jY5p7UFzQvjUs467uTVENZO6U70JOmVmznvy9rrKnVZbBo6j5tnFFRoZzHL2XmONIk29ZBQOKm_ahTNDq3H64Mb9iNLjl8LucXz9jWydvZGswhBNpFkkWEYIuvSvUDYGTbh7VOemdywBdtzy_v3K3IbLgNAU4nS9jaEDI6uA==>

Nonprofits in Minnesota have been told by the state that they must continue to serve on ongoing contracts. But imagine what all of these program directors are thinking about right now . . . If our contract was in process what do we do? Do we lay off core service delivery staff? How do we continue to serve people in some way even while guarding our sustainability? Should we -- could we -- get a line of credit? How likely are we to get funded when the new budget is passed?

My guess is that this will be the final blow for any number of agencies unless the shutdown is very short lived.

Attached is an interview <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=zbprzzbab&et=1106340210932&s=41311&e=001UaSWzEQl6zOhZw8l0OC0hpIg2DoQGSsiOWwAixpxKeVEWRSutcuxC7KLkXjQKrqQYMN8s4c-7EGUZzbReFLMoI6arsMeQDH7_ICOAS115d7VtINUfuJHA10Y1eQ-7m2-hvLF9jXoN-N112pCVj29gUD5jM3eTwc-gwdN4Vth7GIeKikg2ob5ncF-36PY7b12MIw5-ZMGYaHP38jY5p7UFzQvjUs467uTVENZO6U70JOmVmznvy9rrKnVZbBo6j5tnFFRoZzHL2XmONIk29ZBQOKm_ahTNDq3H64Mb9iNLjl8LucXz9jWydvZGswhBNpFkkWEYIuvSvUDYGTbh7VOemdywBdtzy_v3K3IbLgNAU4nS9jaEDI6uA==> NPQ did with two Minnesota based advocates, Jon Pratt and Kate Barr, who have been hard at work trying to prepare the state's nonprofits for the shutdown and advocate for a reasonable budget simultaneously. I think you will be impressed with their enormously comprehensive approach to this very difficult moment.

Our best wishes are with our likely very worried colleagues in the north as we head into the July 4th weekend.

Sincerely,
