yes, that's true, Joan, if it applies. It waz/is the case with IE7 that it, too, couldn't be removed if SP3 were added in after IE7 was installed, until SP3 was removed first.

I just had a quick look on google and I found the following:
Important You cannot uninstall Internet Explorer 8 if it is set as not removable. This occurs if you install Internet Explorer 8 before you install Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Windows XP. If this scenario applies to you, then you must uninstall SP3 before you can uninstall Internet Explorer 8. For more information about this issue, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 950719

Windows update may have installed service pack 3 which might be why you don't get a remove button when you try to uninstall Internet Explorer 8.

 still no luck trying to roll back to i e 7.
