Hi Andy,
I use two methods one is I curl my index finger into a C shape it’s bent at the
knuckle with my thumb on top. I find that’s good for picking as it gives more
control and more of a defined sound The other is I hold my pick with my index
and middle finger (sometimes just index) and thumb.... mainly for strumming.
But honestly I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way..
Good luck :)
Best wishes,
Claire

Hi Peter and Nick – thanks for these thoughts. I was just playing my
acoustic and concentrating more on how I hold the pic most of the time. I
seem to use thumb and index finger mostly, with the point of the pic towards
the strings, my thumb is pointing in the direction of the nut, and my index
finger is turned in at the second knuckle pointing to the strings. Does this
sound familiar to anyone?

Hi Andy,
I always had real trouble using a pick, and recently a very good guitarist
showed me a way which has really helped. Firstly, he holds it between thumb
and middle finger, not index. Secondly, the tip of the pick is only
sticking out a very tiny bit from between your fingers; just enough to hit
the strings and no more.
Best,
Peter

playing guitar. It was totally visual, so no use to me. But it made me
think and ask do I really know how a pic should be held. And the answer
actually is I’m not sure, I just pick it up and use it. So if somebody
could actually describe how to grasp it between the thumb and index finger,
that could be a great help. The description I heard on YouTube was that it
should appear as if it’s coming out of the side of the thumb with the index
finger pointing down, but I’m not sure I understood exactly what was meant,
because when I tried doing it that way, it just didn’t feel right.
