Shoshana:

I know that producers claim we are a small market share but look what happened to books on cassette. Automobiles installed players and the popularity soared. Please don't tell me that reading books while driving meant a *small* market share. I really think that if stoves and microwaves had voice chips that only the visually impaired would buy them. As a reader of sigh-fi, I'm sure you've read about smart houses and characters who program their houses to be lit or warm or have the coffee brewing by the time they pull their vehicle into the garage. It's a excuse, imo, for charging far more than warranted. Unfortunately I'm a little too old and tired to start lobbying (sigh).

Another one of my kittens found the list! Hi, Linda! Well, you know
...accessibility has become a *very* lucrative market, and it is fed by
agencies (including, but not limited to) the Federal Government, who
purchase accessible stuff for us to use (so long as we work for them, or
whatever they require). Also, the producers know very well that we'll
*find* a way to afford what we need, and, since there is often little or no competition, they can get away with it. The rationalization is that we are a small market share, so in order to make it profitable for them to produce
such things, they *have* to charge high prices. This is why, among other
reasons, that I am a Kindle advocate. It wasn't developed for us ...but it
so happens that we can use it, or most of it, and the more who buy and use
Kindles, the stronger our voice will be ...and oh, just by the way, sighted people, for whom the TTS was originally intended, will find most of what we
want very handy, too.
