I did use the table of contents to go to particular headings in the book. What
it does is go to the page where the heading is, so you might need to read a
little approaching it, but it does get you there.

Try double-tapping with one finger from within the book; you should get
a menu. Flick through the choices; if you find Table of Contents,
double-tap it.
